Santorini, Greece
Introduction
Santorini has jet black beaches, a volcanic crater and rugged landscapes, but what most people think of when they hear Santorini is the white building with blue domed tops.
There was a volcano, Thera, that erupted here and volcano is still active, the cliffs' are made of rock, lava and pumice. The bay that surrounds Santorini may actually hide the lost city of Atlantis.
Port Orientation
There is no port big enough for cruise ships in Santorini, so the ship anchor and the tender passengers into Skala Fira.
Transportation
Once you are taken to Skala Fira at the base of Thera you can either take the funicular or donkey into town. Once in town you can either walk around town or take a bus. Another option is to take a taxi but remember to negotiate the price beforehand. There are motorcycles available for the more adventurous.
Sightseeing
In the Southwestern tip of Santorini lies Akrotiri covered in lava by the eruption of Thera.
If you want to find beautiful jewelry and magnificent craft shops stop in Thera. There is also restaurants and cafes on clifftops craft shops and an archaeological museum.
Oia is a postcard village of whitewashed house in the cliff side. There are walk ways down to the black sand beaches. It is a must see for anyone who is visiting.
